Years ago, most lawyers learned mediation without the benefit of formal training or experience. Nowadays, mediation and other forms of interest-based negotiation have become a lot more sophisticated. Participating as an adjunct faculty member, trainer and consultant are ways to keep skills fresh--and continue learning in the process. Recent examples include:
Resolution Systems, Inc., Mortgage Foreclosure Training
As a trainer, work with local court systems in Illinois to train attorneys as mediators in foreclosure mediation programs. Grant money is provided to RSI by the Illinois Attorney General. Loyola University School of Law, Center for Advocacy Created an Advanced Mediation Advocacy course, where students represent clients in mediation before the EEOC, Chicago District Office and the Federal District Court in Chicago. This is a unique opportunity for students to experience mediation advocacy in two different settings. Center for Conflict Resolution Serve as trainer, speaker and mediator for this Chicago-based non-profit. The Center works closely with the courts, the law schools, and the Chicago community to improve access to justice programs in mediation. DePaul University, College of LawCenter for Dispute Resolution In partnership with the Circuit Court of Cook County, Law Division, and the Center for Conflict Resolution, helped create a referral program for pro se litigants. Judges refer commercial cases to the DePaul program, and law students with 711-certifications serve as mediation advocates. |
Illinois Supreme Court, Commission on Access to Justice
As an ADR faculty member, work on a sub-committee to the Dean's Advisory Committee. The purpose is explore ways that the Commission might expand the role of students both as mediators and as advocates in court-based mediations. Circuit Court of Cook County, Mediation Rules Sub-Committee Member of a sub-committee appointed by the Honorable Patricia Banks, Presiding Judge of the new Elder Law and Miscellaneous Remedies Division of the Circuit Court of Cook County. The sub-committee drafted mediation rule recommendations for approval by the Illinois Supreme Court. Elmhurst Memorial Hospital Developed pilot dispute resolution program for hospital staff and physicians to address workplace concerns and communications in the management of patient care. TSA, US Department of Transportation Developed and presented two-day workshop on conflict resolution training and resolution of workplace disputes. |
